Mehrangarh Fort

The Jodhpur Citadel

Architectural Marvel

Mehrangarh, the Citadel of the Sun, stands as a vertical cliff of red sandstone, impregnable and imposing. Rudyard Kipling described it as "A palace that might have been built by Titans and colored by the morning sun". Unlike other forts that are mere military structures, Mehrangarh houses some of the finest palaces and museums in Rajasthan.

Chronicles of Valor

The Foundation

Laid in 1459 by Rao Jodha, the foundation involved a voluntary burial of a man named Raja Ram Meghwal to ensure the fort's invincibility, a story that echoes the harsh sacrifices of the era.

Scars of Cannonballs

The fort gates still bear the marks of cannonballs from the armies of Jaipur, a testament to the fierce rivalries between Rajput states.

Design & Defense

The Seven Gates

To enter the fort, one must cross seven gates, including the Jayapol (Victory Gate) built by Maharaja Man Singh and Fattehpol built by Maharaja Ajit Singh.

Palaces of Light

Inside are palaces like Moti Mahal (Pearl Palace) and Phool Mahal (Flower Palace), known for their intricate lattice work and stained glass.
